April 2006

Dear Friends of German Comedy,

Another terrible month came to an end.

One of last month’s few highlights were the Commonwealth Games, where seemingly everybody could have had a go. I was most impressed by Women’s Double Trap Pairs, which had “too few participants to merit a bronze medal”.
In fact, there were only four pairs challenging for the honours. I therefore want to encourage all female readers: Try the sport out and if it turns out to be neither too dangerous, nor too complicated, nor comes with prohibitive costs then go for it and let British Olympic Committee pay for your trips abroad. And a 5th place at the Commonwealth Games looks good on anybody’s CV.

But now to a seriously devastating topic: football. Bayern Munich and Werder Bremen both crashed out of the Champions League. On the bright side there is thanks to Jens Lehmann still one German player left in the competition, which is one more than England have on offer. Call me old-fashioned or a racist if you subscribe to the Arsene Wenger school of thought but I would find it acceptable to see Arsenal field an English player.

Jürgen Klinsmann has a new admirer – it’s Jose Mourinho. The special one praised our national team manager in a recent interview with Bild Zeitung. No wonder, not only does Klinsmann give Robert Huth the match practise he never gets at Chelsea, he also adds millions of pounds to Huth’s transfer value. How much Mourinho values and supports Klinsmann became clear less than a fortnight after the interview. Mourinho refused to let Huth travel to Germany’s friendly with the US because of Chelsea’s cup game with Newcastle on the same night. Huth had to improve his skills by sitting on the bench for the full 90 minutes.

Last month’s most notable shock in regards to cultural issues was that David Hasselhoff had to fight for his position as Germany’s favourite singer. The Hoff had to survive the musical onslaught of Turkish band Tekkan. ‘Wo bist Du mein Sonnenlicht?’ appears at first sight as a spoof of right-wing groups with
the aim to discredit Turkish youth. Luckily it turned out to be genuine and shot immediately to the top of the charts. And rightly so – it’s hilarious. Have a listen!

That’s it for now – have a good month.

Auf geht’s Deutschland!
