August 2006

Dear Friends of German Comedy,

Thanks God this terrible month finally came to an end.

Football is so much less fun when you’re not winning. The worst thing about our defeat to Squadra Azzurra in the World Cup semis was that unlike the English we couldn’t just go home, blame defeat on a foreign manager and forget about it but had to continue to be good hosts. To add insult to injury we also had to get excited about a total meaningless match for third place.

What made my blood really boil was the atmosphere in Dortmund’s Westfalenstadion, with German supporters all singing and celebrating after the Italy match because they felt so well “entertained”. This outrageously inappropriate behaviour would not have happened in the good days of old. Ballack & Co would have been publicly condemned and pelted with stones. There must be no praise for losing. We are not Scotland.

What turned the national disaster into a private dilemma is my upcoming show at this month’s Edinburgh comedy festival. Having believed Klinsmann’s promise to win the title I named my show “Four World Cups and One World Pope”.
Now I have to keep a straight face when arguing that I meant the 2003 Women’s World Cup in addition to 1954, 1974, 1990 all along. Rubbish!
Have a great month and hopefully see you in Edinburgh!

Henning
