January 2007

Dear Friends of German Comedy,

Frohes, neues Jahr!

Luckily there is no shortage of things to look forward to in 2007: Rocky VI for example. Rocky is driven to success by ‘Jesus energy’ and the movie ends with him pointing to heaven to show ‘respect’. I’m sure you can’t wait for this brilliant movie to finally hit the UK screens either!

Unfortunately, not everybody showed ‘respect’ in December. The Bishop of Southwark, the Rt Rev Tom Butler, for instance got blind drunk and threw an infant’s toys out of a stranger’s car in his vain attempt to win an ASBO to fit in with the people of his South London diocese. He should be ashamed of himself.

As usual Tony Blair got lambasted by the media; this time for holidaying at Robin Gibb’s house in Miami. I find it bizarre that once you become Prime Minister you’re seemingly not allowed to have friends anymore. Obviously, the Blairs could have avoided the negative press had they booked a long weekend at Butlins’ instead of flying across the planet. What’s wrong with Skegness?

Presumably the England cricket team would in hindsight also have preferred to stay home. At the time of writing it looks like a 5-0 Ashes whitewash. Then again, coming second in a major sporting event isn’t that bad after all. It definitely would see the England football team being driven around town on an open-top bus.

Success will be viewed as the result of preparations as opposed to a fluke only if you publicly announce your goals. Therefore, for everybody to see – here are my two New Year resolutions:

1) Find a new beige cardigan with grey leather elbow patches.
2) Grow a mullet.

Auf Wiedersehen – have a great 2007!

Henning
