Late September 2019

Dear Friends of German Comedy,

Here’s another one of them occasional bulletins.

What kind of society, what kind of world do we want to live in? Don’t worry, this is not one of those fashionable climate change ruminations.

Instead I ponder the state of the world now European football got back underway and Eintracht Frankfurt lost 3-0 at home to Premier League no-hopers Arsenal in the Europa League.

German club sides used to be a force but it’s been a long decline over the past two decades. And why is that? I tell you: because Germany is too decent a country, that’s why.

By law all German clubs have to be mutual societies and members have at least 50%-plus-one-vote, making it very unappealing for foreign madmen to come in and throw around their ill-gotten gains.

Also the British Empire has made English the global language and as such London is a very appealing destination for the world’s crooks whilst Berlin and Germany with its lack of colonial guilt can only look on from the sidelines.

To be fair: all this still doesn’t sufficiently explain why on the same night Borussia Moenchengladbach capitulated 4-0 at home to Austrian village team Wolfsberg. Not even Professor Brian Cox can work that one out.

Let’s end on a quick pub joke: who is Borussia Moenchengladbach’s most hated supporter? The one who shouts “Give me a B”.

There you go, laugh a minute.

I am back on the road again this week – hope to see you soon and all the best

Henning
